A hands-on introduction to alpacas and the husbandry involved for beginners.

Our 2016 programme for these popular courses are:

Please ring or email to book or to arrange an individual farm visit if none of these dates  are suitable.

This course is ideal for those who are about to buy, have just bought or are considering buying their first alpacas. Why come to Classical MileEnd Alpacas? We have been breeding alpacas for eighteen years and have plenty of experience to pass on. The lunch will be good too.

The day starts with a farm walk when we look at field layout, pasture management, fencing, water, nutrition and so on. We move on to the assessment of alpaca conformation, foot care, teeth and body condition scoring. The morning ends with course attendees learning how to handle alpacas, how to fit a halter correctly and leading an alpaca.

After lunch we go through basic husbandry including vaccination, worming, breeding and weaning before moving on to fleece assessment, shearing, grading fleece and the end product.

Shearing Workshop Date To be Confirmed for 2016   Apologies, we have had to cancel for this year.

Want to be able to shear your own alpacas? This course offers a half day of classroom learning followed by hands on shearing supervised by Chas Brooke and our stock man Andrew.  The ability to shear your own alpacas brings great benefit to both you and your herd and does not need to be traumatic or back breaking. We can help you brush up your technique or have you shear your first alpacas by the end of the workshop!  Course notes and lunch will be provided. This ever popular course is limited to six people working in three groups of two to ensure all receive adequate shearing time. Course will run if sufficient numbers so please contact us if you are interested using  Click here for guide to course structure.

Shearing Refresher.  Apologies, we are having to cancel for this year.

If you are looking to brush up your skills and gain confidence, why not join us on our own shearing days and work with us. We will give you your own mat, harness and handpiece. This is a free of charge offer, in return for helping us get through our own shearing! Please contact Chas on 01884 243579 or email if you are interested, so mutually agreeable dates can be fixed.
