This is an updated version of the Birthing Handbook and Reproduction Handbook written by the Australian veterinarian Dr Ewen McMillan and alpaca breeder Carolyn Jinks. These two are experts in the field - Dr Ewen McMillan is a Senior Fellow at the University of Melbourne Veterinary School specialising in alpacas and Carolyn Jinks has been breeding alpacas since 1989 and has lectured extensively about neonatal care.

The book has three main sections. Firstly, antenatal care of the female alpaca which covers preparation for mating including selection of stud males, management of the female following mating with a very useful 'mating flow chart', husbandry of the pregnant female and maternal problems prior to birthing. The second section covers birthing with a helpful 'Cria Care Kit', an explanation of a normal birth and when to call for help with a problem birth and care of the mother. The third section is all about looking after the newborn including passive immunity, recommendations for supplementary feeding and dealing with a premature cria. It is an excellent little book, a practical text that will give new and more experienced owners alike more confidence in the nursery field.
