Supporting British Alpaca Breeders

UK Alpaca buys fleeces from British breeders. Following the collapse of two attempts for a fibre cooperative Chas & Rachel formed UK Alpaca Ltd in 2004 to establish a market for British fibre and develop a high quality brand of knitting yarns that does justice to the qualities of alpaca fibre  and in support of British alpaca breeders. Today we collect many tonnes of fibre from all over the UK and actively market and sell knitting and weaving yarns for the trade and retail craft markets.

The fleece is hand graded at our farm in Devon, pressed into many 160kg bales and then sent to the large scale commission processors in the North of England to be made into fully worsted yarn that can be used for knitting, weaving and crochet. These yarns are produced in the natural colours and a substantiale range of dyed colours. Sales are also supported by patterns commissioned from well known designers.

UK Alpaca promotes the British alpaca industry by exhibiting at a number of large retail shows every year and through the website www.ukalpaca.com. Our wholesale arm sells yarns and POSH socks to many other companies and shops. All the outsorts are used by manufacturers in the UK and Poland to make duvets so that there is no waste.

With the inevitable high costs associated with small scale processing, UK Alpaca offers in further support to breeders the opportunity to buy back yarns from our established ranges at wholesale prices with no minimum order quantity. Breeders can then either resell at retail prices or add further value by producing knitted items without the cost, time and hassle of producing quality yarns on small scale.
