My mad little fluffball Alice is no more. She went completely deaf last year after having a huge swelling in her throat that the vet thought was a tumour but wasn’t. On Monday she was perfectly normal all day but in the evening suddenly she was obviously blind and very distressed. Normally she lies on the back of the sofa when we slump in front of the television but she couldn’t make it and wandered round and round the house bumping into things. Kyle stayed up until three in the morning trying to calm her down and yesterday morning we took her to the vet. Eventually we decided she must be put down.

We had dogs at home when I was a child but Alice, a Havanese terrier, was my first dog. I am devastated – very red eyes. We opened a bottle of fizz to celebrate her life last night and remembered lots of Alice moments. As a pup she came rond all the shows with us and had many devoted fans who turned up on the stand repeatedly through the season, not to look at alpacas, oh no, but to see Alice. She sat in her basket with a bowl of water and a supply of pig’s ears while they lavished attention on her. At the hotel when we were at the Royal Show she escaped from the car and ran into the middle of the road. Total panic – we stopped the traffic as she dashed about thinking it was a hilarious game. Luckily the car drivers were very patient and just waited until we captured the little madam. Where ever I was on the farm she turned up and sat on the bench seat in the mule while we did the hay or sat patiently while I picked blackberries with the occasional hectic but futile dash to try and catch a rabbit or pheasant. Her post shower behaviour was interesting to say the least as she ran round the house barking loudly and accusingly at those concerned. And cars, she was an absolute devil, chasing them up the lane if she got the chance. Goodbye Alice, we miss you.

  9. Bye bye Alice – I remember her having so much attention wherever we went, especially as a pup when she was just so cute! Also I remember how excited she got at Christmas – playing with all the wrapping paper and barking away! Every year we would get Christms presents from her – very thoughtful of little Alice. And of course, sneaking into the bedroom when you weren’t looking to snatch a discarded sock to chew on!
