Chas was off this morning delivering a group of female alpacas to a new client in Okehampton. They have lots of Shetland ponies to gaze at but were slightly perturbed at their new surroundings and tried to get back into the trailer. I hate it when they do that, it makes you feel awful. However I’m sure they will be fine once they have settled down.
It is all quiet here today, no rain, no wind, the alpacas just grazing or lying around sunbathing. Better be quick as there is suposed to be more rain coming in later. I’ve got my washing on the line and more in the queue waiting to be pegged out. I love hanging out washing, I have no idea why as I am completely useless at lots of other domestic things particularly ironing.
Our little car is in the garage with something horrible wrong with it AGAIN. It is a Ford Focus and although very nice to drive, everything that could have gone wrong with it so far, has. Must get something different next time but we’ll have to earn some more money first.
There are roadworks everywhere. I spend many long minutes waiting for the convoy quad bike to turn up and then have to wait behind him while he chats to his mates on the way through the resurfacing works. It seems as if most of Devon is being resurfaced at the moment. It is very hard not to give them ‘drop dead, you creeps’ looks as they always seems to be standing around having a nice chat about putting the world to rights.
Meanwhile I am sorting out the fleece samples to send to New Zealand for testing. This is dull work. I have to divide the sample, keeping one half here for reference, then label up the other half, check on the computer for who they are etc. There’s at least 150 samples and I’m not a third of the way through yet. I have to keep going away and doing something else to keep myself motivated.

i have sent some fleece samples to SGS for the first time this year. Do you find them the best to deal with?

I think they are very good, very quick. We have been using them for several years and it is best to stick to one method so you are comparing like with like. We sample all our animals every year and use the results as one of the many factors that influence a breeding programme.
