I was out feeding the alpacas this morning once the rain had stopped. I was watching a load of crows mobbing a buzzard when I heard the sound of stud males fighting. They were screaming their heads off and when I got there all the young males were lined up along the fence line watching the fun. Three of the males were knocking seven bells out of each other running round the field at full pelt. The youngest male in the field starts them off because he is a real pain in the arse. They put up with him for a while and then lose it. Avalanche, Talisman and Distinction looked on as the other four got really wound up. It is a big field and after about 15 minutes they were pretty puffed out and just stood there a few feet apart screaming at each other. I turned off the mule and sat there and watched in case there was any blood but there wasn’t.

We have had our last cria now – a fawn girl – arrived a bit late at about four oclock but was up and suckling very fast so we were happy with that. We’ve had a little run of sore eyes, two cria and an adult, who knows why? The marvellous ointment opticlox soon sorts it out, two of them are completely better and one is nearly there. There’s always something.
