We have been doing a big reshuffle of the fields today so that all the animals that are for sale are actually in the sale field, unless they are heavy pregnant and that the ones up for mating are not miles away. The weanlings needed sorting out as well, as the boys in there were getting very annoying and jumping on the girls. They have joined the yearling boys while the young females have gone in to the main female field. If any of them dream about going back on their mothers, they will get a severe slap. We are in the midst of Devon drizzle and the animals look like dish cloths – just right for the Devon Show.

Chas is ordering a load of grass seed at the moment to oversow our cold, clay slopes. It is a mix of timothy, fescue and clover as we want some nitrogen fixing plants in there. We’ll use our spinner to sow it and then chain harrow it in. The slopes are north facing and with these sopping winters we’ve had, a lot of the nutrients in the soil have probably washed away and the grass is not growing that well.
