Andrew found two buzzards in the fox traps yesterday having a nice pheasant breakfast – what a nerve. These are humane traps so he just opened the door snd off they hopped. I have got very close to a young buzzard recently. He sits around on the fence posts and you can get just a few yards away before he flies off.

It is very cold but very beautiful today and the temperature has soared to one degree over freezing, hurrah. It is market day in Tiverton so off I went as the fridge is a sad looking desert. The fish man from Brixham is there, a rare breed meat man, Alistair with fabulous vegetables from Knightshayes and other local suppliers, loads of cheeses, free range eggs – this guy always brings some live chickens that stand around outside in a pen. Why they don’t make a break for freedom I don’t understand. So we are going to have a virtuous three days eating squid, brill and John Dory before being most unvirtuous with belly pork, all that crackling, marvellous. I haven’t been let out of the farm for ages so had to recycle as the newspapers on top of the fridge had reached the ceiling and everytime you chucked some more up there some of them fell down and slapped you in the face. Life is hard.
