Dual Carrigeway Apple and Ginger jelly is plastered on the jars of my latest foray into preserving. I scrambled up the steep bank of the dual carrigeway from Tiverton to the motorway to go apple picking. Just copying Thomas and his organisation (Kentish Town Transition thingy) who, with permission, pick fruit from London gardens and then turn it into something – jam, chutney, cider, apple juice. Budgens, the rather green supermarket, gave them a donation so they bought an apple press. I want one but as we have no apple trees, a bit pointless. Anyway I picked all these apples and brewed them up, sieved them, god that’s boring, bunged in some stem ginger and six wondrous large jars of jelly appeared. After that I made medlar jelly and now I’m making quince jelly. Just about out of jam jars, I might have to buy some, oh no! if I am to make marmalade.
Yesterday Chas resolved to finish painting the outside of the house before the howling storm hit. Joshua is not at home, Andrew kept finding other things to do, so I ended up going to the top of the ladder. This is a bit awkward for us cripples, what with the height, the awkward reaching, the paint can dangling on my stump and quite big gusts of wind and some unpleasant looking insects sheltering up there. I was very brave and did it, hurrah, the old legs weren’t half shaking when I finally descended.
lesley beazer –
I have got loads of Ribston Pippins on the trees; an apple press; and lots of jam jars. If you are coming this way let me know. LB
