First thing this morning up to the vet’s surgery with an alpaca cria with a bad leg. This little boy’s front leg was horribly floppy and he wasn’t putting any weight at all on it. The x-ray showed that it wasn’t broken or dislocated but must be a very bad strain, probably from slipping down our wet hills. So he is on metacam, an anti inflammatory, and he and his mother Lucille are in the birthing field which is flat and small and will come in at night. We wanted to keep them both in the barn but Lucille got very stressed so it is probably better that she is out with the others.
Yesterday afternoon we saw a very handsome dog fox in the field. He was running towards us when he suddenly saw Chas and shot off through the hedge, across the stream and into the woods. But just five minutes later he, or maybe another fox, appeared in the field again. It seemed very distracted so I don’t know whether someone was taking pot shots at it or what.
We have set our big party date for July 21, theme an Indian Summer. Every year we have a party in the barn, around 90 people usually come, lots of young things, friends of Tom and Alex. They camp on the lawn and stay for the weekend so it is a lot of fun. Something to plan in this grim weather.
