My hens have suddenly started laying again. We were on one egg a day if we were lucky but now it is eight a day. The ones laid by the Welsummer Araucana cross are green, very exotic. As a result of the fridge bulging with eggs I sat down with an egg recipe book and last night achieved my first egg curry. I moved from the egg book to the 100 Best Curries one as the recipe looked a lot more interesting if fairly complicated. To my amazement the store cupboard triumphed and we had just about everything required and not past the sell by date either.
We were in a desperate hay situation as none of the phones for Bernard with a beard seemed to work. Chas went off to Umberleigh and came back with 48 bales which meant that Bernard was bound to come – he did yesterday with another 140 bales at half the price. That’s god because although the grass is growing, albeit very slowly, the girls are still eating a lot of hay.
My hens got a big clean out yesterday, just as well Chas is better, because there were an awful lot of wheelbarrow loads of muck. I have put all the alpaca halters in the washing machine so they look good and we had a major wash down of the barn and yard with the power washer. It looks a lot better and as it rained the tanks are full again so more power washing is on the list for Andrew this week. Field cleaning would be even better but the ground is far too wet out there. While I was in chicken land I decided that the time had come for another two of my young cock birds so they are now in the freezer. I’ve got loads of cock birds from my last hatch so plenty of coq au vin to come.
Elaine –
Mine are laying like mad as well. The cuckoo marans’ eggs are a wonderful deep brown.
