Ah, the good old icy blasts, my eyes were watering with the cold this morning while feeding the animals. It is minus one in the barn, nothing like as bad as our all time low of minus six. The water troughs have some ice on them but it is easy to break.

We’ve got a mother and daughter in the barn. This cria has not grown on and is quite old really. It sat under the heat lamp for a while and then started eating everything in sight. It may be one of those youngsters who just doesn’t make it, I’m not sure. Its mother moans all the time which is beginning to drive us mad.

The halter training for the Futurity has begun. It is painfully slow with some of them but they are all very calm and easy to halter, it is the walking that is still a bit tricky. Chas says they are all doing very well and anyway we have another three weeks…! Oh to be so confident.

  1. We were halter training one of our alpacas today. -10C, but no wind. Have had -20C earlier this winter, and can expect the same next week. It’s cold, but the alpacas are handling it better than we do 🙂

What we are worrying about, though, is at least one of the dams are due for a cria next month. February is the coldest month of the year. We’re a bit nervous about that.
