We checked the field of animals where the shorn cria were several times yesterday just in case one of the mothers failed to recognise her cria. Of course there was one – a little white job wandering forlornly round the field. We were about to get the field up when Chas realised he had to shoot off to Tiverton to the post with something urgent. When he got there he thought he would fill up the big car with diesel, which he did and then realised his wallet was on his desk. Panic! Josh was sent to the rescue.

Meanwhile I had a duck in the oven about to turn into an over cooked duck and the field still had to come up. There are 56 alpacas in the field so we paired them all up until we found the lost one. Her mother wouldn’t allow her to suckle so we held the mother so that she could have a good feed and kept the pair on them in overnight with another pair for company. Al was well this morning.

The rain was horrendous in the middle of the night and the gravel at the side of the house has been swept on to the lawn. The alpacas all seem fine after a thorough soaking.

Lots of the alpacas have sore feet at the moment, usually a sore place just above the toes. It must be the wet as this doesn’t normally happen. We wash the sore place with Hibi scrub and give it a blast with the Terramycin spray. Seems to work.
