We’ve had the most glorious weekend and there are flowers everywhere, primroses, celandines, violets AND I can go out without a coat and ten pairs of socks. The stud males were up in the barn yesterday and when we sent them off back to their field Kazzan and Centurion set off like greased lightning pronking down the track. They looked so fit and cheerful, even our more stately whites Paris and Distinction broke into a canter.

One of the weanlings was scouring and as it is white the black glurp all down his legs looked terrible. We treated him and today it looks as if it is all drying up. I think it might be my fault as I put some leftover haylage in their hay manger and maybe he gorged on that and had an upset tummy. One of the adult females had a nasty tooth abcess, Chas wielded the scalpel and a week later, that is healing very nicely and she’s putting on weight. We are running up to our first births – just three in April – so we will be bringing those girls back from the fields where they have spent the winter to the lush grass of the birthing paddock shortly. I don’t imagine they will give birth in April as for the last two years all our spring births have been delayed until 12 months gestation.
